Get Your Site

Setting your own website within biig.net domain is really easy and takes only few minutes.

First type in the browser window name of site you would like to set eg. http://my-business.biig.net ot http://mysite.biig.net. If the name you have chosen is not taken yet you will see something like this:

Fill in your username (that doesn’t need to be the same as your site name!), e-mail address, answer security question and rewrite numbers you see on small image (the last two were introduced to get rid of robot spammers). Press NEXT.
Now you can type in name for your site (this one CANNOT be changed!) and your site title (you can change it later on via admin panel). And done :) .
Activate your site via activation link you will get in e-mail sent to address you have typed in during singup process.

If it’s your first ‘adventure’ with WordPress we recommend to read this tutorialwritten by guys from WP. You will find there some basic information plus list of many more resources on managing/using WordPress powered sites.

However there are few differences between standalone and MU (=Multi-User; such as this on on http://biig.net ) installation of WordPress.

Probably the most important one is that plugins and themes are controlled by a central system administrator. You cannot individually upload your own plugins and themes, only select from the ones made available by the system administrator.

THEMES

At this moment there are 8 themes available. All were carefully selected and tested to make sure they are widget ready and their header images (if there is any) can be customized via Admin Panel. We took care about it since without access to your site files that’s the only one way to make the site look as you want it.

To change your theme you need to login to your Admin Panel and select tab Presentation. There you will find all available themes with screenshots. If theme offers possibility of changing header image you will see new tab under Presentation -> Custom Header Image (or Colour Options for WP-Andreas09 theme) after making chosen theme current.

PLUGINS

What’s the difference between plugin and widget?
Wiget is a plugin that allows to arrange the various elements of your sidebar without having to change any code (actually in case of WPMU installation you have no access to sidebar file so this the only way to customize it ;) ).

Here is a list of currently installed plugins and widgets (all were tested to make sure they can be used within WPMU installation):

  • Adsense-Deluxe - to insert your AdSense ads within posts
  • BP-Bookmarks – to add bookmarks either to your posts or/and sidebar
  • SendMY.INFO – to display Send My.INFO subscriber opt-in area
  • Simple Tagging – to add tags to your posts
  • Simple Tagging Widget - to display tag cloud in the sidebar
  • Top Commentators Widget – to display most active commentators in the sidebar
  • Ultimate Category Excluder - to manage your categories (you can exclude one or all from your front page, feeds, and archives)
  • WP-EMail – to add e-mail it feature to your posts
  • WP-PostRatings - to enable post ratings

To use plugin you need to login to your Admin Panel and activate it under Plugins tab. Regular plugins you can customize under tab Options (after plugin activation new tab will appear there eg. AdSenseDeluxe; however few create their own tabs just next to Options tab). To find out more about particular plugin just click on its name (in the same place you have activated it). It will redirect you to plugin home page.

To add widgets to you sidebar you need to first active them (the same way as plugin). Then you need to go to Presentation -> Widgets. You will see default sidebar and at the bottom base with all available (built-in or activated) widgets. Just drag them and drop onto your sidebar. The picture below will point you place you need to click on to configure widget.
